The Effect of Cytokines on Proliferation and Expression of HLA-DR, ICAM-1 and VCAM in Cultured Human Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells




Abstract
This present study focused on the question of whether the expression of HLA-DR, intracelluar adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule(VCAM) and proliferation of cultured human vascular smooth muscle cells(SMC), stimulated
with
interleukin-1¥â(IL-1¥â), interleukin-4(IL-4), interferon-¥ã(IFN-¥ã), tumor necrosis factor-¥á(TNF-¥á) and platelet derived growth factor(PDGF). Stimulation of SMC with IFN-¥ã induced marked expression of human leukocyte antigen-DR(HLA-DR). IL-4
and
TNF-¥á did not stimulated HLA-DR expression of cultured SMC. Expression of ICAM-1 in cultured SMC was stimulated with IFN¥á and TNF-¥á but did not increased with IL-1¥â and IL-4. Expression of VCAM in cultured SMC was markedly increased in
stimulation
with IL-4, and also increased in stimulation with TNF-¥á but no expression was observed in stimulation with IFN-¥ã. Stimulation with IL-1¥â and PDGF induced marked proliferation of SM, and reduction of proliferation with IFN-¥ã.
